Gokhan Avcioglu is the principal and founder of GAD in Istanbul, established in 1994. At GAD (Global Architectural Development), Gokhan Avcioglu completes a number of different projects of varying functions. Among his projects are office buildings, public and commercial spaces, and residences in Istanbul, Izmir, Bodrum, New Jersey, Washington DC, Virginia, Philadelphia, Connecticut, Libya and Dubai. Gokhan Avcioglu has also designed various stores in Manhattan, NY, and restaurants in Istanbul & Washington DC. Among his recent projects are mixed-use residential and commercial projects such as One Ortakoy and , Esma Sultan in Ortakoy, Istanbul, the Beyoglu Borusan Music & Art House in Beyoglu, Istanbul, the Bodrum Kuum Hotel in Bodrum, and the Besiktas Fish Market in Besiktas, Istanbul. He has also completed residential lofts in Washington DC, hotels and private residences in Bodrum and Kazan, Russia, and a public park in Libya.
He has won numerous awards, including 2012 International Hotel and Property Awards with Eskisehir Spa& Thermal Hotel, five awards at 2012 International Property Awards with Haaz, One & Ortakoy, MDNY House, Unisite II, Borusan Music & Art House, 2012 International Architecture Awards with FISH MARKET by The Chicago Athenaeum, 2012 Green Good Design Awards with One Ortakoy and 2012 Urban Regeneration and Master planning Award MIPIM Future Awards with GDKP. And also A number of projects have been short-listed for the Aga Khan award for Architecture.
Gokhan Avcioglu and GAD’s projects have been exhibited at the Chicago Athenaeum Museum in Chicago 2012, Istanbul Design Biennale 2012, Prague Architecture Week 2012, AIA New York 2011, at the Royal Art Academy in London 2005, at the Museum of Architecture in Rotterdam 2004 at the Miami Biennale, and 2003 at the Minima Art gallery in Philadelphia 2002.
Since 2001, Gokhan has been running studios in the Ecole Speciale d’Architecture in Paris, and at Yildiz Technical University, and at Istanbul Technical University in Istanbul.GA is currently collaborating with Cecil Balmond, Philip Gumuchdijan, and with Jeff Lee& Mark Papa in international projects. Gokhan Avcioglu also has offices in New York, and is currently sharing his time between both cities. Avcioglu is a member of AIA New York Chapter and Chamber of Architects Turkey.
Global Architectural Development is an award winning company, based in Istanbul and New York that has been performing architectural practice, research and concept design since 1985. The firm is owned by Gokhan Avcioglu and is in partnership with GAD’s global collaborators.
GAD’s belief is that contemporary and current architecture & urbanism are influenced by software, consumer habits and behaviors and approaching to the projects holistically. These are among its field of interest. GAD understands architecture as a practice that relies on experimentation, values historical precedents and finds new ways to combine both in a mutually benefiting fashion.
